SYNODALITY OF THE CHURCH IN THE DIASPORA

Abstract

Even before the Second Vatican Council, the great twentieth-century theologian, Karl
Rahner, put forward the thesis that the contemporary Church lives in the diaspora, in a largely de-
-Christianized space and among societies leaving the faith in God. One of the answers to this state
of affairs should be the awakening of lay people, related to the process of regaining their subjectivity
in the Church and taking responsibility for the ecclesial community. It seems that this process
is integrally connected with the concept of synodality, which after the Second Vatican Council is
gradually becoming more and more important in the teaching of the Church. An important step in
this direction was the synod on synodality inaugurated by Pope Francis, which is to chart the most
important directions of future pastoral changes in the Church. This article attempts to present the
role that lay people have to play in this regard.

Keywords:

synodality, laity, subjectivity, church, pope.
