PROBLEMATIC USE OF FACEBOOK AND THE PROCESSES OF DECONVERSION AMONG THE YOUNG PEOPLE. THE MODERATING ROLE OF THE TEMPORAL ORIENTATION

Abstract

A study was conducted to find out if there is a relationship between problematic Facebook use and deconversion processes among youths, and if the relationship between problematic Facebook use and deconversion processes is the same or different for people who differ temporal orientation. The research was questionnaire-based and included 547 young people between the ages of
14 and 19 who had a Facebook account. Based upon the obtained results, it was shown that the problematic use of Facebook is associated with deconversion (measured as a general score) and its two dimensions: moral criticism and existential void. On the other hand, on the basis of the analyzes
of the relationship between the problematic use of Facebook and the deconversion subscales and temporal orientation, it was shown that in the group of persons oriented to a negative past, the problematic use of Facebook, is associated with more frequent leaving from the religious community
