CATHOLICISM OR ORTHODOXY? – A DISPUTE OVER THE MODEL OF RELIGIOUS AND NATIONAL LIFE IN THE EASTERN BORDERLANDS OF THE SECOND POLISH REPUBLIC. (CONSIDERATIONS ON THE BASIS OF THE DECISIONS OF PRIESTLY CONFERENCES IN PIŃSK IN THE 1930S)

Abstract

The Second Polish Republic was inhabited by many nationalities representing various denominations. One of the key problems of the reborn state was to calm the ethnic situation, especially in the Eastern Borderlands, which were destabilized by the diversionary activity of the Soviets. A characteristic initiative of the Catholic Church were the union priestly conferences in Pinsk, which in the 1930s generated the most important arguments for promoting the union movement in Poland. An important goal of the Church was to include this neo-union movement in the great antemurale christianitatis project, being in the opinion of many something of a historical mission for Poland.
