This text constitutes the analysis of development of the Catholic
doctrine regarding the right to entitled defense. The starting
point shall be the proposition of understanding of the right
to entitled defense included by St. Thomas Aquinas in the Summa
Theologiae. Next, the cognitive focus shall be directed at the
interpretation included in the Catechism of the Catholic Church
and the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church. The
next step is the consideration regarding the category of the „true
paradox” that was used by John Paul II during the ethical and
theological analysis of the applicable scope of the right to entitled
defense and the principle of dignity and sanctity of every
human being. Further on, selected replies of popes from the
post-Conciliar period about peace shall be presented. They constitute
a very precious complementation to the organized and
methodical teachings of the Catechism and the Compendium on
the right to entitled defense.
