The attitude of Catholic social science to capitalism was ambiguous from the beginning. On the one hand, his various abuses were criticized, on the other hand, the successive popes hesitated from completely reject or condemn him, pointing to numerous positive values he promotes. This article discusses the attitude to two ideas on which the capitalist economy is founded: the principle of unlimited free competition and the idea of economic growth.
