Easter is a period during which many customs and traditions are celebrated in Poland.
However, do they aim to bring humans closer to the essence of the mystery of the Resurrection?
This article attempts to answer this question by examining three selected customs. The first one
discussed is the burning of “żur”, which involved lighting a fire in which pots of “żur” were initially
burned, followed by the burning of brooms that were then run through the fields. The second
tradition is “judaszki”, where a group of boys organized a procession to punish Judas, the betrayer
of Christ. The third tradition is building a nest for the Easter bunny, which takes place on Holy
Saturday and involves finding and arranging a place for the bunny to leave presents. The analysis
showed that the above customs have little to do with the true essence of Easter. Rather, they focus
on secondary matters, which can even hinder the discovery of the true essence of Easter, which is
the triumph over death by Jesus Christ.
