EVANGELIZATION IN THE FORM OF PANTOMIME THEATHER

Mariusz Drozdowski

Abstract

Pantomime, whose origins are connected with the emergence of tragedy and comedy in ancient Greece, over time became an independent art form but also a tool used for anti-evangelization in the Roman Empire. Christianity, especially in its early centuries, had to contend with a hostile Roman authority that utilized cultural tools, including mimes and pantomimes, to combat the emerging Church. In modern times, the foundations for a new relationship between the Church and the world of art were laid by the Second Vatican Council, recognizing the great potential in artistic means of expression inspired by the spirit of humanism and Christianity. Evangelists increasingly turned to the “silent theater”, addressing themes that can be classified into three complementary stages of new evangelization, dealing with kerygmatic, pre-evangelistic, and inculturation issues.
