IMAGE OF OLD AGE IN THE BIBLE IN THE SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT OF THE ANCIENT WORLD

Abstract

Old age seems like a relative reality, as it largely depends on the point of reference. A twenty-year-old person looks at this stage of life differently than a sixty-year-old person. However, the awareness of passing time is common to people of all epochs, and cultural, social, and religious factors influence how it is experienced. This study is a reflection on old age from the perspective of biblical tradition in the context of ancient culture. During the analysis, it was observed that the Old Testament environment opens up theological reflection for the early Church, which viewed Israel’s religious experience from the perspective of Jesus’ teachings. Jesus’ death and resurrection opened up a new perspective on old age. It ceased to be the end and became only a stage towards a new life, much more beautiful than the present one. Old age has become, to some extent, an invitation to participate in the journey of suffering with Jesus, in the arduous climb to Golgotha, to overcome death at the top.
