THE INFLUENCE OF SELECTED MICROELEMENTS ON HUMAN HEALTH

Katarzyna Czarnek

Abstract

Cobalt and chromium can be found everywhere in the natural environment. These metals
can also be created through anthropogenic activity since they are used in various sectors of
the industry, which causes pollution. Cobalt and chromium are microelements that are constantly
present in human body and, at the same time, necessary for its proper functioning. They constitute
the basic components of implants, more and more often used in medicine, as well as ingredients
of: preparations, dietary supplements and energy drinks increasing the energy and performance
of human body. When used, biomaterials may undergo corrosion in the environment of tissue
fluids, while the released metal ions, which are stored for a longer period, can be toxic for humans.
Moreover, during the intake of dietary supplements, one must remember to limit the consumption
of energy drinks because they are the source of significant amount of chromium and cobalt. It is
extremely important to avoid such supplements during a therapy or medicine intake in the case
of chronic diseases without a prior consultation with a physician or a pharmacist. People must
be aware that carefree and uncontrolled consumption of dietary supplements may cause negative
results, since they may react with medicines and obstruct the course of one’s therapy and become
harmful to human body.
