The significance of mining in the formation of ancient civilizations

Abstract

Since the dawn of humanity, the development of civilization has been closely tied to the exploitation of resources. Among the oldest minerals known to humans is agate. Ancient Sumerians and Egyptians used it for crafting amulets, ritual vessels, and decorative items. Around 6000 years BC, turquoise was mined on the Sinai Peninsula. Additionally, nephrite was extracted in China, while Egypt yielded emeralds and gold. One of the greatest achievements of ancient Egypt was its ability to organize a mining workforce. Expeditions to gold mines, copper mines, or quarries were often likened to military campaigns. Almost all high-ranking Egyptian officials underwent service in such expeditions during their youth.
