“THE RESURRECTION IMPERATIVE”. THE PROGRAM OF THE THIRD POLISH INDEPENDENCE IN THE TEACHING OF ST. JOHN PAUL II IN 1991

Abstract

The article analyses papal teaching during the first apostolic visit to Poland by John
Paul II after the collapse of the communist regime in Poland. It should be pointed out that the
Pope outlined at the time of this visit his own vision of the Polish Third Independence based on
the natural law premises (called by him “order of wisdom”). The latter are summarized in Ten
Commandments. St. John Paul II also stressed the importance of “making elementary distinctions”,
i. e. clarification of basic concepts‘ right meaning such as “freedom”, “human rights” or “Europe”.
This should be combined with the proper understanding of Poland’s history; history of “chivalrous
nation”. The article points out that the papal teaching from 1991 is to be seen as continuation of the
teaching of the late Primate of Poland, Cardinal Wyszyński formulated during the last months of
his life (i.e. at the turn of 1980 and 1981).
