The Catholic Church’s Stance Toward Totalitarian Regimes in the 20th Century, Based on the Teachings of Selected Representatives of the Church

Piotr Kaczmarek

Abstract

The relationships between representatives of the Catholic Church and the rulers of totalitarian states are the subject of many discussions and studies in 20th-century history. The Church’s views on many issues, such as God, man, the state, and society, were fundamentally different from the ideologies upheld and imposed by totalitarian regimes. By examining the teachings of prominent Church figures in the 20th century, such as Popes Pius XI, Pius XII, and John Paul II, as well as the heads of the Church in Poland – Cardinal August Hlond and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński – we can see how fiercely the Catholic Church fought for the truth – a truth that it taught and that totalitarianism sought to erase from human hearts at all costs.
