Old Testament Background of Jesus' Proclamation of the Jubilee Year in Nazareth (Lk 4:16-30)

Jan Klinkowski

Abstract

A man, created in the image and likeness of God (Gen 1:27), possesses an awareness of the passing of time and is able to view his life from the perspective of eternity. In the act of creation, he was called to subdue the earth (Gen 1:28), which means a calling for civilizational and cultural development. However, original sin has entered his nature, causing him to use time and space in a disorderly manner. To counteract excessive exploitation, the Hebrews developed the observance of the Sabbath, the Sabbath year, and the Jubilee year. A man should realize that he is not the absolute ruler of time, space, animals, or other people. In the New Testament, Jesus emphasizes liberation from sin, which is the source of all enslavement. A man experiencing forgiveness from God should adopt an attitude of reconciliation with others and mercy, which restores dignity.
