Emotivity in the structure and nature of a person. An attempt to reconstruct one of the key issues of Karol Wojtyła’s “forgotten” anthropology

Abstract

This article raises the concept of human emotivity by locating it both in the structure and nature of a person, and therefore against the background of research findings that are already “forgotten” or unnoticed in the work by Karol Wojtyła. Basically, I reconstruct the fundamental assumptions of the so-called “adequate anthropology” (i.e. Wojtyła’s attempt to combine elements of Aristotelian-Thomistic metaphysics with phenomenology), clearly emphasizing the integration of emotiveness with consciousness, agency, and human moral responsibility. Wojtyła aims to indicate the special role of emotions as an inherent and dynamic aspect of human existence. For him, emotiveness is not just a blind biological force, but is shown as an important factor contributing to the complementary personal development of a person. Thus, it may be noticeable that Wojtyła’s approach to the problem of human emotionality points the basis for a deeper understanding of human nature as a psychophysical and psychoemotional unity. In other words, Wojtyła as a philosopher clearly combines emotivity with the sensitivity of a person, which reveals the importance of dynamism in the stream of relationships between the psychic and somatic aspects of human nature.
