The Dilemmas Surrounding the Church’s Teaching on Patriotism

Abstract
The aim of this article was to show the dilemmas that may arise when we confront the concept of patriotism postulated by the Church with other elements of its social teaching. The analyses carried out showed that, firstly, the conciliar definition of the common good does not prevent patriotism from being included in this category. Secondly, the particular nature of patriotism can be justified on the basis of the Church’s teaching without excluding a universalist perspective. Thirdly, the model of patriotic education postulated by the Church may mean that it is necessary to accept a weaker form of patriotism as a result of this education.
