THE ROLE OF THE EUCHARIST IN THE PROCESS OF SHAPING SOCIAL BONDS

Abstract

In the Eucharist, the paschal mystery of Christ is realized, in which His sacramental presence is being made present under the appearances of bread and wine. It is the central event of the Church. Christ, our Passover and living bread, gives people God’s life through the gift of the Holy Spirit and invites them to offer themselves, their work and all created things. First of all, the Eucharist should be celebrated in the parish, which as a privileged place for its celebration, also becomes
a place of building the community of believers. In this dimension, the celebration of this sacrament gains community-building features – it creates social bonds, which primarily consist of moral bonds: trust, loyalty, solidarity and reciprocity. As such, they create a sense of interpersonal unity, because they transform a view of the society perceived as common “we” and not strange “they”.
