Pope Francis is convinced that God’s will is the universal brotherhood of all people on
earth, therefore he decided to encourage all people of good will to enter a path leading to the unity
of peoples and nations in the global community. That is why he wrote the encyclical Fratelli tutti.
The Pope is convinced that now is the time to build universal brotherhood and Christ’s disciples
should be leaders in this activity. An important tool for building universal brotherhood in the world
community is undoubtedly love, the manifestation of which is the charitable service of the Church.
The aim of this study is to answer the question: what anthropological premises are contained in the
encyclical Fratelli tutti, which encourage Christians to undertake acts of merciful love towards their
neighbor? The main source of reflection was already shown in the title of this study, but it will be
expanded to include other teaching documents of Pope Francis and his predecessors. The content of
the analyzed encyclical indicates that there are at least 4 important anthropological reasons calling
on Christians to care for their neighbor in a merciful way: the inalienable dignity of man, God’s
plan for universal brotherhood, the vocation to love one’s neighbor incorporated into human nature,
solidarity and social love. The above indications determine the structure of this study
