Pope John XXIII, on the 70th anniversary of the publication of Rerum novarum, published
the social encyclical Mater et Magistra. He expressed, in it, his opinion concerning the
changes in the scientific, technical, economic and socio-political spheres. He did not engage in
polemics with ideologies and political concepts. In his opinion, the achievements of the human
intellect, and not political ideas, can be the starting point for social changes. John XXIII also
accentuated a need for socio-moral education. Also today, the Church, as Mother and Teacher,
accompanies all the problems of the world and of human being.
