ECHOES OF THE SOCIAL ENCYCLICALS IN THE CONTEXT OF REMOTE WORK DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Piotr Wajs

Abstract

This year marks another round (130) anniversary of the first social encyclical Rerum
novarum by Leo XIII. It is an opportunity to look at the changes taking place before our eyes in
the context of the social teaching of the Church. The years 2020-2021, however, did not constitute
a natural evolution of society. The SARS-Cov-2 virus that causes the COVID-19 disease has forced
the world to rapidly remodel not only social relationships but also ways of working. This article
aims to show the references of Church documents to problems related to working in an epidemic.
The documents of the Church respond to the situation at hand. However, the problem nowadays
may be the transmission of the teaching content to the faithful. The Church’s concern for human
dignity contained in documents should be conveyed to a greater extent today through the latest
forms of electronic communication. Pope Francis, who himself uses social media for this purpose,
is calling for it.
