The article has made an attempt to analyze the homily of
John Paul II given on 5 June 1979 on Jasna Góra and addressed
to the clergy and believers of the then Metropolis of Wrocław.
The authorities rejected the pope’s visit to Wrocław. That is why
everybody gathered on Jasna Góra. In the said homily, by referring
to life and spirit of St. Jadwiga, the pope drew particular
attention to the matter of national unity the foundation of which
are justice, love, and reconciliation between nations. After 40
years, it appears that the message presented by the pope is of
more than just historical value. It still remains universal despite
the social, political, and cultural circumstances in Poland and
in the international community
