THE CHURCH AND CHRISTIANS IN THE EUROPEAN SOCIAL SPACE ACCORDING TO J.H.H. WEILER

Abstract

There are many reasons for the current situation of the Church in the modern world and they are associated with the world external for Christians – in foro externo, with visible manifestations of christophobia, as well as with the ethos within Christian communities – in foro interno, revealing the weakness of civic effectiveness of Christians due to identity problems. Observing social reality, one can see and analyse reasons that are interdisciplinary in their nature. In these manifestations one should see a deeper plane that motivates social behaviour towards the Church and the Church itself as an institution and as a community of the faithful. It seems that an accurate analysis of the above social facts about Christian Europe is made by Professor J.H.H. Weiler, who is not afraid to say what European academic communities prefer to remain silent about, and what politicians and the media want to ignore in the name of the so-called political correctness. The main thesis of the article closes with the general question: is Europe becoming a religiously uninhabited territory?
