THE IMPORTANCE OF RELIGION IN SHAPING WESTERN EUROPEAN CIVILIZATION

Abstract

Religion is an essential part of Western European civilization. It shaped the West in
a specific way through the supremacy of spiritual values/forces over the worldly ones. Religion is
a powerful shaping factor because it belongs to the human nature. People are religious beings and
thus civilization is steeped by religion, particularly the West, which was essentially saved by the
Church from destruction after the fall of the Roman Empire.
